Rakiura (Stewart Island)

A southern gem located at the southern point of the South Island in Aotearoa.

Rakiura is abundant with sea life, with some of the clearest waters in NZ. This little island had a lasting impression on me and I wanted to try and capture that in paint.

There is a rich history of early settlers living from the ocean, fishing and boat building were some of the early trades based on Stewart Island. The life buoy enclosing the scene represents the balance between humans and nature. They somewhat rely on each other to survive. Rakiura is on a quest to make the entire island predator free and currently has marine reserves and surrounding wild life sanctuary’s hosting some of NZ’s rarest bird life.
